Singing and Performance Course
A unique opportunity for young singers aged 14–17, Chetham’s Singing and Performance Course offers an intensive and inspiring week of vocal training for intermediate to advanced students. With a focus on both solo and ensemble work, the course explores a wide range of musical styles – from classical and contemporary to choral, opera and musical theatre – and is led by expert staff from Chetham’s renowned Vocal Department.
Singers benefit from a rich programme of activities including one-to-one singing lessons (three across the week) and personalised drama coaching sessions (two to three per student) with our resident opera director. This is a level of individual attention rarely offered at this stage of musical development. Students also participate in group workshops on song interpretation, foreign language diction, vocal anatomy and healthy vocal technique, all designed to deepen their understanding of the voice and enhance their performance skills. Songwriting classes with our resident composer offer a creative outlet where students learn to craft original lyrics, melodies and harmonies, with each session tailored to their personal style and experience.
A highlight of the course is the collaborative, semi-staged performance created with the course director, giving every student the chance to perform both solo and in ensemble settings. With a small cohort of just 16–20 participants, the course offers the ideal balance of individual support and dynamic group work. As part of Chetham’s wider Summer School, singers also connect with orchestral, piano and jazz students through shared activities, building friendships and musicianship across disciplines.
